Steel is used in a variety of applications and discovering new ways to prevent steel from corroding is necessary from both an economic and human safety perspective.  The presentation described here will address corrosion protection through the use of nanoporous oxide thin-films prepared using sol-gel techniques and applied via dip-coating methods.  Accelerated corrosion testing methods were performed using linear polarization to determine the pitting potential of both untreated and metal oxide-coated steel substrates.   Results with SS316 in a seawater electrolyte show an improvement of 0.6V in pitting potential of coated compared to uncoated steel electrodes. In addition to improvements seen during the accelerated corrosion experiments, the coated SS316 was also field-tested in heat exchangers continuously exposed to seawater. The nanoporous metal oxide coatings were shown to improve the lifetime of the heat exchangers in seawater from three months to more than four years!
