Transition metal hydrides are essential intermediates in the selective reduction of CO2 to formic acid. The presence of a pendant base allows for fast, selective protonation of a reduced metal while simultaneously protecting the resulting metal hydride from further protonation. The effective rate of proton transfer can be controlled by varying the pKa of the proton source, the hanging group, and the metal center, resulting in maximum faradaic efficiency during the electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to formic acid.
