Al nanoparticles were prepared either by the thermal decomposition of triisobutylaluminum or by the chemical reduction of AlCl3. Triisobutylaluminum was thermally decomposed in hot phenyl ether containing perfluoroundecanoic acid capping agent to give spherical, 200 nm diameter fcc aluminum particles. Alternatively, reduction of aluminum chloride at high temperature with n-butyl lithium also gave spherical aluminum nanoparticles. The perfluoroundecanoic acid somewhat protected the particles from corrosion, thereby allowing them to be exposed to the air for determination of chemical composition and structure.
