Colloidal germanium nanoparticles offer an alternative to narrow band gap semiconductor quantum dots that contain Pb, Cd, or Hg, and they are of interest for applications that include energy conversion and storage, photodetectors, charge storage, and biological imaging. Historically, it has been chemically challenging to synthesize colloidal germanium nanoparticles, and advances in this area have lagged behind those of other classes of semiconductor nanostructures. Over the past decade, though, many new capabilities and insights have emerged. This talk highlights some of these key developments, as well as our recent contributions in this area. We will describe results involving the synthesis of size-tunable germanium nanoparticles, as well as new advances in the synthesis of several germanium based chalcogenide nanostructures, including GeS, GeSe, and GeTe.
