Recognizing that high-temperature superconductivity usually occurs in strongly correlated electron layered systems (e.g. cuprates and iron arsenides), we embarked on a search for related polar intermetallic compounds with layered transition-metal pnictide substructures that exhibit similar electronic/magnetic behavior and structural features.  Subsequently a series of layered alkaline-earth-metal titanium pnictide oxides, BaTi2Pn2O (Pn = P, As, Sb) were synthesized.  The title compounds crystallize in the filled-CeMg2Si2 structure type (CeCr2Si2C-type) that contains [Ti2Pn2O]2- layers.   Physical property measurements on BaTi2Pn2O (Pn = Sb, As) show these exhibit magnetic and electronic (SDW/CDW) transitions (TSDW/CDW = 54K, 200K, respectively), reminiscent of the undoped phases of the FeAs-based superconductors.  Chemical substitution experiments led to a systematic lowering of the magnetic transition temperatures, and superconducting transitions were observed.  These results demonstrate that competition and mutual interaction of different orderings in strongly correlated systems provides new opportunities for exploratory materials synthesis.
