Ternary pnictides with ThCr2Si2-type structure exhibit diverse and often unconventional physical properties. Thus, LaCo2P2 exhibits ferromagnetic ordering in the Co sublattice, while the isostructural RCo2P2 (R = Ce, Pr, Nd) order antiferromagnetically in both Co and R sublattices.1 The magnetic properties of isostructural RCo2As2 have remained unknown, largely due to the lack of phase-pure samples of these materials. We have recently described the use of binary precursors or Bi-flux reactions for the preparation of phase-pure LaCo2As2 and demonstrated its ferromagnetic behavior.2 In this contribution, we report an extension of these synthetic approaches to the Ce- and Pr-containing analogues. We also describe the use of alternative techniques for the synthesis of another structurally related intermetallic ferromagnet, AlFe2B2, which exhibits remarkable magnetic and magnetocaloric properties.1.
