Iron and cobalt carbeneodiimine (CDI) complexes have been synthesized that are structural analogues to the catalytically useful pyridyl diimine (PDI) complexes. Replacement of the central pyridine donor in PDI complexes with an N-heterocyclic carbene results in significant changes in the electronic properties of the complexes, as is evidence from their spectroscopic, electrochemical, and chemical behavior. This behavior will be discussed and the application of these complexes for the catalytic conversion of olefins to value added products will also be presented.
