The possibilities of silica-, silicate-, and siloxane-based nanomaterials as functional nanofillers will be presented. Layered alkali silicates, such as layered sodium octosilicate, have SiOH/SiO- groups on the interlayer surfaces which can be chemically modified. The properties of modified silicate sheets are controlled by the introduction of functional groups. Organic modification of interlayer surfaces with various silylating agents provides various possibilities including exfoliation to nanosheets. Reverse charged interlayer environments can also be realized by overcharge compensation of layer charge. Tubular silicate imogolite is a unique inorganic component for materials design. Nanosized silica- and siloxane-based components, such as mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) and dendritic siloxane oligomers, have not been focused as nanofillers. However, these materials should also have high potentiality because the surfaces can be modified in various ways to adapt the conditions required for various applications.
