Previous studies of the enzyme silicatein a have shown that serine and histidine are critical to the catalytic function of the enzyme for tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) hydrolysis. Incorporating these functional groups into a synthetic block copolymer, we show the templated and catalyzed formation of silica and titania. Further, the titania is shown to be catalytically active with a morphology differing from sol-gel produced material. Silica is shown to templated at both the nanometer and micrometer scale.
