The extreme temperature stability, pseudo-aromaticity and an unusual electron withdrawing cage structure are well known properties of 1,2-closo-dicarbadodecaboranes (carboranes). Such interesting properties have prompted much interest in the incorporation of carborane into a variety of polymers, principally as a strategy to improve temperature and oxidative stability. However, much less is known about the effects of carborane incorporation on fully conjugated optoelectronic polymers. Here, carboranes have the potential to improve stability, tune band gaps and manipulate film crystallinity.In this paper we present the synthesis of a novel benzocarborane containing monomer incorporating organotin at the 1,4 positions. Polymersiation with a variety of conjugated comonomers enabled the preparation of the first fully conjugated benzocarborane containing polymers in good molecular weight. Analogous polymers containing benzene were also prepared and the thermal, morphological and optoelectronic properties of both systems were compared and contrasted.
