Since the ancient times, silver has been known to possess antibacterial activity and it is used in the treatment of infections. Currently there has been an upsurge interest for implementing green chemistry principle into the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs). In this work, we report a simple, cost effective and green method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles using extract from the dried S. molle seeds for the first time. Silver nitrate was used as silver precursor while water extract from the dried S. molle seeds was used as both reducing and stabilizing agent without the use of any accelerator. S. molle has been reported to have a high medicinal value with its many phytochemicals that exhibit potent antibacterial and antifungal properties. By varying the reaction time and concentration of the water extract, the temporal evolutions of the optical and structural properties were monitored. The as-synthesized Ag-NPs were characterized using UV/visible spectroscopy, Fourier transforms infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Optical analysis showed that as the reaction times increased, the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peaks are red-shifted indicating increase in particle size. The TEM images showed that small, monodispersed and spherical particles were produced at higher concentration of the water extract, while both spherical and rod shaped were produced at lower concentration. The high resolution TEM (HRTEM), showed the presence of lattice fringes, confirming the high crystallinity of the as-synthesized materials while the FTIR confirmed the capping of the obtained Ag-NPs by the functional groups of the extract. The cytotoxicity test was carried out using Brine Shrimp Assay to confirm the potency of the Ag-NPs
