Chlorine dioxide has been used to treat potable water, inactivate Bacillus anthracis (anthrax), mold and bacteria as well as to remove malodorous vapors associated with putrefaction. This study aims to characterize the gas phase reaction products between chlorine dioxide and volatile compounds, especially those of amines and aldehydes. The analytical techniques used include infrared spectrometry with a 2.4-meter gas cell and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) after cryogenic preconcentration on a glass bead trap and a Tenax� sorbent trap. Chlorine dioxide reacted with cadaverine rapidly as indicated by the evolution of ammonia along with the decreasing concentrations of cadaverine based on the infrared spectra. The preliminary data showed the presence of methyl chloride, methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, cyanogen chloride, and ethyl chloride for the reactions of chlorine dioxide with volatile organic compounds. Several compounds like phenylethyne, acetophenone, and benzaldehyde could be attributed to the chlorination of the Tenax� sorbent material.
