Fluorinated arylphthaleins and arylsulfonephthaleins are pH indicators for potential biomedical applications including molecular imaging. A number of the above compounds have been synthesized by direct fluorination of the aryl(sulfone)phthaleins by fluorine gas under acidic conditions. The fluorinated arylsulfonephthaleins have also been obtained by the Friedel-Crafts reaction. The products have been isolated and analyzed by MS and NMR. The conformers of the neutral, acid and base forms are well distinguished in 19F NMR spectra.
