Nonfood plant biomass holds potential to provide humanity with a sustainable source of chemicals, materials, and fuels, if biorefining processes of such biomass can be advanced to be technologically and economically competitive compared to traditional oil refineries. Towards this central objective, we have developed several highly effective transition metal-based or organic catalytic systems for rapid conversion of biomass-derived monomers to high-molecular-weight bioplastics having stereo-random to stereo-perfect microstructures and for selective upgrading of the biorefining building block to kerosene/jet fuel intermediates or liquid fuels. Accordingly, this presentation will describe our efforts and progress on those fronts, with an emphasis being placed on mechanistic aspects of catalysis.
