In first year chemistry we have opportunity to draw rich connections between chemical reactivity and human activity that can form the basis for deeper understanding. We might start by asking: �How might sustainability fit into my introductory chemistry course, when I already have more than I can reasonably �cover� in the curriculum?� Alternatively, perhaps better questions are: �What does every student need to know about how the tools of chemistry can contribute toward solutions to the complex challenges of how human activity is exceeding our planetary boundaries?� and �Can I use sustainability as a motivating theme to introduce chemistry content that is already on my course outline, at the same time making learning chemistry more relevant and interesting?� We will illustrate ways in which we use sustainability as a rich context to embed core chemistry content, both in general chemistry and in open interactive learning resources for the public.
