The solvolysis of chloroformate esters is typically followed by two methods; acid-base and conductiometric titrations. In acid-base titrations, the amount of acid (HCl) produced can be measured against a standard solution of sodium methylate in methanol (NaOMe) as base, and lacmoid as the indicator. For conductiometric titrations, the rates of reaction in the solution is measured via an electrode that is connected to a conductance box which measures the ion concentration formation in the solution that causes a potential difference, and is graphed over time to formulate a rate. This project has focused on analyzing the rates of reaction of phenyl chloroformate determined by these two experimental methods, in a series of pure and aqueous binary organic mixtures. Initial results demonstrate that the rates of reaction determined by conductiometric titrations and its acid-base counterpart, do show differences in the strongly hydrogen-bonding fluoroalcohol mixtures.
