The detection of analytes by fluorescence enhancement is a very useful technique for biological and environmental developments. Fluorescence is a very sensitive technique with detection limit in the single molecule range, which makes this technique highly desirable for the detection of analytes that exist at extremely low concentration. Anions play a significant role in biological and environmental processes, and therefore it is necessary to develop highly sensitive and selective methods for the detection of these species. Among the many anions that are associated with biological and environmental processes, fluoride ion is uniquely important because of the narrow concentration window in which it nontoxic. In this presentation, we will discuss the synthesis and application of a silaanthracene moiety as a fluorescent probe for the detection of fluoride ions. We will also discuss the selectivity of this probe over other anions that are presents in biological and environmental systems.
