The Chemical Processing Technology Program at Delta College has trained over 400 students in the past 5 years for careers as process operators. In response to local industry needs, students must take over 150 hours of practical exercises in a pilot plant setting in order to meet the graduation requirements. Despite the challenges presented by varying demographics and experience, the program has enjoyed an impressive safety record while gaining the respect of local companies and has obtained national recognition. The target audience for this presentation is anyone involved with the operation of a pilot plant or an industrial partner of a training facility that does. Join me for a presentation in which I will share what has worked and also what has not. This presentation will focus on ideas involving the importance of integrating with area business partners and we will discuss innovative ideas of stressing/assuring safety performance within the academic setting. I will stress the importance of implementing GLP (Good Laboratory Practices), SOP's (Standard Operating Procedures), Behavior Based Accountability and student involvement in decision making to foster safe, conscientious and environmentally responsible graduates. This represents a large part of why our program boasts a nearly 90% hiring rate with area chemical companies � despite the hiring challenges that the recent economy has presented us.
