Naphthyridines are an interesting class of compounds that allow us to probe steric effects in the electocatalytic reduction of CO2 to methanol.  We will report on the synthesis and characterization of several new ligands and their tranition metal complexes.  Based on Bocarsly's reported mechanism for pyridinium-catalyzed electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to methanol, one might predict that MLCT complexes of this new ligand class may offer a mechanism for photochemically driven reduction of CO2.  The goal of this study is to prepare such complexes and explore their associated electrochemistry and photochemically driven redox chemistry.
