Metal-containing liquid crystalline materials have been of interest for some time due to the intrinsic potential of combining the properties of metal complexes with the stimulus responsiveness and processability of liquid crystalline materials. We have prepared multiple series of platinum(II)-based metallomesogens by conjugating the [bpyPt(II)] moiety with �-branched aliphatic chains. The resulting materials show interesting properties including phase-dependent luminescence and novel redox behavior. As an extension of this work, we have begun to explore two approaches to the preparation of multi-metallic systems. The first of these approaches utilizes a polythiolato ligand, such as 1,2,4,5-benzenetetrathiolate, to link multiple aliphatically-modified [bpyPt(II)] units. The second approach seeks to use the aliphatically-modified [bpyPt(II)] as �corners� in the formation of supramolecular squares via linkage by dialkynyl 'sides'. Recent progress toward the synthesis and characterization of these mulit-metallic systems will be presented.
