Counter-anions (A  ) of monodendate [Ir(I)(CyNHC)(COD)]A  complexes, though seemingly insignificant, have substantial influence on the reaction rate and catalytic activity in transfer hydrogenation. Neutral Ir(I) complexes, with anions (X  ) directly coordinated to the metal center, display activity in respect to the counter anions, whereas cationic Ir(I) complexes with weakly or non-coordinating anions (Y  ) , display similar catalytic activity, indicating distant contact of the anions to the iridium center and thus are of lower relevance in the catalytic cycle.?
