L-Theanine (L) adducts with Ni(II) and Fe(III) chlorides were prepared by boiling under reflux 2:1 molar mixtures of L and hydrated metal chloride in triethyl orthoformate-ethanol (teof-etOH) mixtures. The new solid complexes are water-free adducts of the types: [Ni+2L-2(etOH)2 ] 0 and [Fe+3L-2(etOH)4 ]+ Cl-. On the basis of analytical, spectral, and magnetic evidence these new complexes were formulated as involving anionic deprotonated amide N-bonded theanine ligands. The neutral Ni(II) adduct has a distorted tetrahedral structure while the Fe(III) complex is anionic and hexa- coordinated.
