Synthetic progress toward linked PCS pincer ligands is presented. The targeted ligand features an aryl backbone with a central monoanionic carbon donor flanked by bulky phosphinite and linking thiol sidearms. The proposed synthesis of this ligand involves conversion of 3-hydroxybenzylalcohol into a benzyl halide, followed by nucleophilic attack by a dithiol linker in order to displace the halide and join the two aryl fragments. Once linked, bulky phosphines would be installed on the phenolic oxygen atoms. Metalation would be achieved by reacting the ligand with group 10 metal chlorides. Several synthetic approaches and possible catalytic applications are discussed.
