Ligands containing linked dipicolylamine (dpa) and bipyridine (bpy) sites are being evaluated as platforms for the synthesis of heterometallic complexes.  The paramagnetic metals Cu2+ and Co2+ were found to preferentially bind at the dpa site over the bpy site.  EPR and IR techniques were used to identify the binding site, and all results were compared to those for model ligands.  IR results were also compared to those for previously synthesized diamagnetic Rh+, Zn2+, Pd2+ and Pt2+ complexes whose binding sites were primarily determined through NMR techniques.  Preliminary work towards synthesizing and characterizing heterometallic complexes of Cu2+ or Co2+ with Zn2+, Pd2+ or Pt2+ is underway.
