Heterobimetallic Ru(II)-(bridge)-M(II) complexes with bridging ligands incorporating both a-diimine and dithiolene coordination sites have been prepared and characterized.  Depending upon the identity of M and the nature of the ancilliary ligands, photoexcitation of the Ru-diimine center may induce redox activity at the M-dithiolene center.  Spectroscopic and electrochemical studies have been undertaken to elucidate the observed photo-redox activity.  Possible application of such complexes in solar energy conversion is discussed.
