The purpose of this study is to explore the safety, effectiveness and efficiency of various chemical inventory systems as compared to the newest technology � Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). For the past decade, ORNL has utilized bar-scanning technology to reconcile their chemical inventory. Upon adopting this inventory technique, there was a marked improvement in overall efficiency over the older, hand-written, paper and pencil system. However, with continued growth and increase in the abundance of chemical stocks, this technology has become slow and less reliable requiring physical handling of individual chemical containers. In this study, the RFID system will be assessed according to accuracy, efficiency, compliance to regulations (international building and fire codes), and any improvement in safety in comparison to previous storage and inventory reconciliation processes.
