The ultimate environmental fate, which includes chemical transformations, of C60 (as nanoscale aggregates) and hydroxylated fullerene (fullerenol) in aqueous systems remains unclear. This study examines the reaction kinetics and transformation mechanisms aqueous chlorination pathways for fullerenol and aggregated, water stable C60 (nC60). A series of batch reaction experiments was conducted over a range of environmentally relevant conditions (pH, Eh, etc.) to delineate reaction kinetics and spectrally identify products. The reaction rate of fullerenol chlorination decreased with increasing system pH, and the apparent reaction orders with respect to fullerenol and free chlorine concentration were 1.0 and 0.3, respectively. The physiochemical transformation of the aqueous fullerene species was confirmed through a battery of product characterization methods (UV-Vis, FTIR, XPS, TEM, DLS and MS). Relative partitioning (reactants vs. products) was investigated via octanol-water partitioning (Kow) and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM-D) using varied sensor surfaces.
