In this study we investigated the effect of activation procedures using carbon monoxide or syngas on catalytic performance of 15 wt% Co/Al2O3 catalyst for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis in a fixed bed reactor. The catalysts were characterized by means of temperature programmed hydrogenation/oxidation coupled with mass spectroscopy (TPH/TPO-MS) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Different types of carbons were identified (i.e. surface carbide, bulk carbides, polymeric carbon and graphitic carbon) as the result of the use of different activation conditions (gas type, temperature or duration). The catalyst activity was low after activations with pure CO at 250 or 350 �C and methane selectivity was high. This is attributed to presence of CoO, CoxC and/or deposited carbon. Relatively high CO conversion (35.4%) was observed after the syngas activation at 350 �C, but CH4 selectivity was high (17.1%).
