Building on our recent studies of the dynamics of the HOCO radical we have carried out near-threshold dissociative photodetachment (DPD) studies of the HCO2� and DCO2� anions to probe another important region of the potential energy surface for the OH + CO ? H + CO2 reaction. These experiments have been carried out at a photon energy of 4.27 eV (290 nm), where photodetachment accesses the three lowest-lying electronic states (2B2, 2A1, and 2A2) of the formyloxyl radical. The photoelectron spectrum is dominated by OCO bending excitation in the three states owing to the large change in OCO bond angle upon photodetachment. Structure in the photoelectron photofragment coincidence (PPC) spectrum reveals that predissociation of HCO2 leads to a distribution of CO2 product bending excited states that vary as a function of electronic state.
