Cycloparaphenylenes, which consist of para-connected phenylene rings connected in a cyclic manner, have gained much interest recently from synthetic and theoretical viewpoints due to their potential applications in electronic materials as well as host-guest chemistry, as they are the simplest structural unit of armchair carbon nanotubes. Although they have a simple structure, their synthesis has been a significant challenge because of their highly strained character. We have recently succeeded in the synthesis of CPPs and their derivatives via square-shaped cyclic tetranuclear platinum complexes.  We report here the selective synthesis of cycloparaphenylenes with different diameter and their derivatives by an extension of our synthetic strategy. Several physical properties of the synthesized compounds will be also reported.
