Capture and subsurface co-sequestration of acid gas (H2S and CO2) is one approach that can reduce the emissions of CO2 and H2S. To implement acid gas co-sequestration, the potential of acid gas leakage along existing and abandoned wellbores needs to be evaluated. In this study, the interactions between pozzolan-amended wellbore cement and acid gas were studied via two approaches: exposure experiment followed by SEM-BSE and SEM-EDS analyses and model simulation using the reactive transport modeling program CrunchFlow. Two types of pozzolan-amended wellbore cement (type I and type II cement) were studied. Model simulation, SEM-BSE and SEM-EDS results all show that under the geologic sequestration conditions, the alteration of type I cement (35 vol% pozzolan�65 vol% class H Portland cement) was not significant after 90-day exposure. However, the alteration of type II cement (65 vol% pozzolan�35 vol% class H Portland cement) was significant after 2.5-day exposure.
