Nitrogen inclusion in the heterocycle of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) has been shown theoretically and experimentally to lower HOMO and LUMO energy levels.  In this work, this technique has been employed to develop a family of materials with LUMO levels spanning > 1 eV with applications as acceptors in organic photovoltaics (OPVs).  Novel accepter materials have been employed in lamellar OPVs with a variety of donor materials.  X-ray and quenching studies have been performed to investigate the relationship between morphology, charge transport, and exciton diffusion.  The synthesis and properties of these materials serve as guides for the future design of additional non-fullerene acceptors.
