Mesoporous rich ultra-stable Y (USY) zeolite which aimed at heavy oil catalytic cracking was prepared through desilication and dealumination of NaY zeolite. It was found that defects are formed in NaY zeolite framework during the alkaline treatment, Si(0Al) and Si(1Al) atoms are selectively removed from zeolite framework, and silanol nests and unique hydroxyl nests with framework associated Al-OH were created in the framework during the alkaline treatment. The defects play an important role in the formation of mesopores in Y zeolite framework during the further hydrothermal treatment. Catalytic studies showed obvious increase in gasoline and light cycle oil selectivity when it was used to crack the heavy oil (VGO), the improved catalytic performance is attributed to the upgraded mesoporosity system of USY zeolite, which is the active component of the catalyst.
