Five kinds of comb-type amphiphilic poly( acrylic acid amide-co-2-acrylamido-2-methyl propane sulfonic acid) (PAAMPS) with different length of alkyl side chain and ratio of polar/apolar groups have been successfully synthesized and used as emulsifying agent for Liaohe heavy crude oil with high content of asphaltenes. Polymer surfactant with a relatively longer alkyl side chain and larger molar ratio of n-amines/acrylic acid leads to higher stability and lower viscosity of oil/water emulsions. These comb-type polymer surfactants should be ideal emulsifying agents for crude oil with high content of asphaltenes.
