Photochemical drug delivery attractively affords spatial, temporal, and dosage control simply through control of the light source. Our group has investigated the photochemical delivery of nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, and the use of quantum dots (QDs) as photochemical sensitizers. Recently, we expanded beyond our sensitization efforts to investigate QDs as photochemical drug delivery transports. This work fundamentally investigates 1,1-dithiooxalate (1,1-DTO), a molecule known to decompose upon two-electron oxidation, and DTO-ester adducts as QD surface ligands. Preliminary results suggest that CdSe QDs significantly accelerate the photochemical decomposition of 1,1-DTO and DTO-ester adducts.  Identification of the photoproducts and mechanism of QD assisted surface ligand decomposition will be discussed. QD surfaces modified with DTO-ester ligands, where the ester contains the active drug component, could be utilized for photochemical drug delivery applications in the future.
