Exploiting the microstructure of materials is a viable approach in searching for battery electrode candidates for high performance batteries.  Performance issues, such as poor rate capability and diminished cycling capacity, can be addressed by structural considerations.  Poor conductivity due to large path length for the transport of ions and electrons, material fatigue associated with the insertion of Li-ions, and limited contact among electrode components are among the highest touted problems plaguing lithium based batteries.  The dimensionality and the size of electrode materials present intrinsic variables which may be tuned to enhance electrochemical performance without the need of elaborate engineering.  The use of x-ray techniques to interrogate several materials for lithium based batteries will be discussed, where the relationship between structure and resulting electrochemical function will be described.
