Materials in the system Cu-V-VI (V=P, As, Sb; VI=S, Se) have been identified as absorber candidates for use in high-efficiency photovoltaic cells on the basis of quantum mechanical calculations and a search employing the metric Spectroscopic Limited Maximum Efficiency (SLME). Select materials of composition Cu3-V-VI4 in particular, are predicted to exhibit high efficiencies (> 20%). We describe for this family phase equilibria for mixed compositions and compositional tuning of band gaps between 0.6 and 2.4 eV with attendant hole mobilities up to 15 cm2/Vs. These properties coupled with relatively low synthesis temperatures (T < 450 oC) makes members of this family especially attractive as candidates for new polycrystalline thin film solar cells in a tandem configuration.
