While the necessity of vanadium in biological systems is recognized, the role that this element plays in biochemical processes is still being investigated. In this work, the effect of dioxovanadium(V) salicylaldehyde semicarbazone complexes on mammary tumor cells (MCF-7) is investigated. Several vanadium complexes with different substituents on the benzene ring have been synthesized. Three of the substituents are electron donating groups (CH3, C(CH3)3, and OCH3), three are electron withdrawing (Br, Cl, and NO2) and one is hydrogen. It is postulated that the different substituents change the electron density within the dioxovanadium center, which can cause differences in the chemistry of the complexes. Reduction potentials and the reduction rates of the complexes have been probed using a model system and these results are also reported.
