The lithium ion insertion behavior of V2O5 cathode materials is strongly dependent on the structure and morphology of the sample, which depends on synthesis methods and annealing history. Porous V2O5�nH2O films prepared via sol-gel methods have highly disordered, nanoribbon morphologies characterized by high surface areas and variable interlayer water content. Annealing these V2O5�nH2O materials at temperatures above ~250�C converts the film into orthorhombic, nanocrystalline V2O5 with the loss of water. Evidence for this phase transition will be presented from variable temperature X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis and electron microscopy. The electrochemical potentials at which lithium ions are inserted also differ for these materials, depending on the structure of the vanadium oxide host. The lithium ion insertion behavior of the V2O5 films, annealed at temperatures ranging from 150�400�C was studied by cyclic voltammetry and spectroelectrochemistry in 1 M LiClO4 in propylene carbonate. These results will be correlated to grazing incidence X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis data, informing our understanding of the nature of the different lithium insertion sites in these V2O5 materials and their evolution with annealing temperature.
