Scintillators are used in medical practice as detectors of ?-rays. Europium oxyorthosilicate (ESO) belongs to a known group of scintillator compounds. Its structure has not previously been formally documented. ESO was synthesized by combining a europium(III) nitrate solution with a sodium silicate solution in a 2:1 molar ratio. The ESO was created using both traditional hydrothermal and microwave-assisted hydrothermal techniques. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were performed to evaluate the structures of the samples used in each hydrothermal method.
