Lutetium oxyorthosilicate, commonly referred to as LSO is the most common scintillationdetector used in positron emission tomography (PET).  Currently, the method to produce LSO is known as the Czochralski method, where lutetium oxide and silicon dioxide arecombined and melted down at extremely high temperatures.  Due to the energy intensive process of this method, a new method has been proposed to synthesize the compound in its powder form.  Samples are currently being synthesized using a microwave digester.  The goal is to achieve precise stoichiometric control by combining specific molar ratios in order to obtain pure LSO powder.  The structural characteristics of each sample have been analyzed using a powder x-ray diffractometer (XRD) in addition to scanning electron microscopy (SEM), to examine the particle size and shape.
