The ion exchange of transition metals into layered perovskite hosts is of interest for the development of new compounds with significant properties such as magnetoresistance, photocatalytic activity, and superconductivity.  The preparation of new layered perovskites is an important part of this effort � additional host materials will allow for greater synthetic diversity in ion exchange targets.  In this study, a series of new tripled layered perovskite ion exchange materials, RbLaANb3O10 (A = alkali metal) were sought, utilizing a two-step preparation strategy. Reaction of the intermediates RbLaNb2O7 and ANbO3 was successful, yielding the new compound RbLaNaNb3O10.  Analysis of X-ray powder diffraction data indicates that RbLaNaNb3O10 is isostructural with the known triple-layered perovskite, RbCa2Nb3O10. Interestingly, the corresponding potassium compound was not accessible; it is expected that ionic size of the A-cation plays a key role in the formation of RbLaANb3O10. Details on synthetic methods, along with ion exchange studies, will be presented and the general utility of this two-step approach for preparing new ion exchange materials discussed.
