Stilbene and similar organic molecules are known to undergo pedal motion in the solid state.Pedal motion is a conformational change of an olefin within a crystal lattice that can alter theoverall physical and chemical properties. The dynamic motion can be studied by temperaturedependent X-ray diffraction by determining relative occupancies of carbons atom within theolefin at given temperatures. The motion can affect photoreactivity of olefins in co-crystalswherein a double bond converts from a photostable to photoactive geometry in order to allowa [2+2] cycloaddition reaction to occur. In this presentation, we will discuss crystallographicstudies of pedal motions within photoactive organic co-crystals based on resorcinol andstilbazoles. Crystal structures of various photoreactive co-crystals will be discussed.Differences between the reactant molecule alone and how it differs from the co-crystal will alsobe addressed.
