Two thiophene-based monocyclic receptors L1  and L2  and one thiophene-based bicyclic receptor L3  have been synthesized and studied for phosphate binding in solutions by 1H NMR and 31P NMR and titrations. The bicyclic host L3  shows a greater affinity for phosphate than the monocyclic hosts. Structural analysis of the phosphate complex with L1  reveals that mono- and di-hydrogen phosphates are encapsulated between two hexaprotonated receptors in a sandwich fashion.
