Radical based anti-oxidants have rekindled research interest in persistent radicals. We are studying how carbon and nitrogen based radicals react with oxygen both experimentally and theoretical calculations. Irradiation of beta substituted azido propiophenone derivatives (1 ) results in both a) azido cleavage and formation of carbon centered radical and b) triplet alkyl nitrene. We used laser flash photolysis apparatus to measure the rate of the N and C based radicals to react with oxygen. We are preforming calculations to establish the idea that the ionization potential (IP) values for carbon and nitrogen centered radicals to form the corresponding carbocations directly correlate with their ability to react with oxygen.The ionization potential of the carbon and nitrogen based radicals can by changedby the electronegativity of the R substituent in 1 .
