Board-like liquid crystals were synthesized from ortho-phenylene derivatives and characterized with polarized optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. We have previously shown that alkoxy-substituted dibenzo[fg,op]naphthacenes exhibit calamitic mesophases at high temperature. We are currently attempting to lower the temperature and broaden these liquid crystal phases through a change in side chains (alkoxy to alkyl) and by exploring the effect of mixing compounds of different lengths. The compounds are synthesized from o-phenylene oligomers prepared by Suzuki�Miyaura coupling, with photochemical dehydrohalogenation being the key step.
