Org. semiconducting polymers have found application in cutting edge technologies such as org. light emitting diodes, printable electronics, field-effect transistors and photovoltaics. An astonishing no. of papers has emerged wherein a new semiconducting polymer or set of related polymers are each independently prepared. In this contribution, several new organic semiconducting polymers were prepared via facile post-polymerization modification of a single parent polymer. This approach guarantees that the resultant polydispersity indices and very similar average molecular weights. Specifically, a poly(p-phenylenevinylene) derivative parent was modified to include side chain chromophores, redox active, cross-linking or metal-binding units.  These new materials also feature m-phenylene units to periodically disrupt conjugation. This disruption allows us to exert better control of effective conjugation length. The post-polymerization-added chromophores ae also placed within a sterically-protected pocket, thus shielding them from interchain pi-pi interactions. pocket also enforces intrachain interactions. This synthetically engineered feature give rise to well-defined photophysical properties such as intramolecular charge transfer and FRET processes in these materials. Synthesis, solution ,film photophysical properties and electrochemical data will be discussed.
