The understanding and quantification of any global cycle rests in large part upon definition of the size of the interacting reservoirs and rates of turnover. In the carbon cycle, this is a particularly formidable problem. From a 10-year measurement program of the mass independent oxygen isotopic composition of CO2 at UCSD we have developed a new means to understand the rate of atmospheric transfer and independently quantify global primary productivity. During this period the occurence of the largest El Nino in 200 years was particularly important in developing an isotopic sensitivity analysis of this new technique.
