It is now widely understood that chemistry at surfaces and interfaces is important to the chemistry of the troposphere.  In this presentation we will give examples of how modern experimental approaches to study the composition and chemistry of surfaces and interfaces can help to develop a fundamental understanding of chemistry in the atmosphere.  Specific examples that will be described include the interaction of water with organic films as a function of the degree of oxidation of the film, reactions on models of sea salt aerosols, and the chemistry at the liquid/vapor interface of aqueous solutions.
