Using a pilot-scale, downdraft system, consuming approximately 25 kg/hour of wood chips, biomass from southern forest resources has been gasified under varying process conditions.  The synthesis gas produced is composed of ca. 20% carbon monoxide, 12.5% carbon dioxide, 3.5% methane and 19% hydrogen, varying to some extent with feedstock and operating parameters.  The gasifier is integrated with a spark ignited engine and 25 kWe generator, supplying electricity to a co-located building.  The synthesis gas is also compressed for conversion to liquid fuels via Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.  The current paper describes the operation of the system, syngas composition and catalytic conversions.
